Unwraveling the Mysteries of the Moon People

This is a satirical look at the first page of a book called ‘Moon People‘, written and self-published (I say, are those alarm bells I hear…?) by an author from whom we could all learn a great deal…

Firstly, let us examine the three words “THIS STORY BEGINS…” This is an interesting meta-reference that provides the first clue to the fact that beneath a deceptively simple outer layer, there is a fearless daring at work here that is not afraid to delve into complex literary devices, and possibly sets the stage for further journeys beyond the Fourth Wall later in the

Professionalism Matters: Part 1 PDF Print E-mail

Professionalism Matters: Part 1

When a writer takes the step from thinking as a hobbyist, to thinking as a professional, the question “What markets do I submit to?” is one of the inevitable steps. Finding the answers to that question can be one of the most frustrating challenges you will face.

So, first things first, what is a professional market? There are two categories. We'll deal today with the short-fiction markets.

Short-story professional markets are defined by Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America as those paying 5c or more per word. Needless to say, the list is small.

What are the benefits of working with the professional markets, versus the semi-pro?

Well, first off, the money. Some of the pro magazines pay as much as 10c a word. Multiply that by the average 3000 words and you get $300 dollars for a few days' work. Not bad, right?

Writers Horoscope PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kuro

Aries (March 21- April 19) - Though you might be frustrated with your writing, you shouldn't give up on it.  Your characters need you to turn things around.  Don't be too prompt to insert your own opinions on where your story should go.  Let your characters guide you.  You should look into sending your characters on a voyage: chances are good it will be profitable.  Don't let others limit how you think about your character's families.  Monday will be your best writing day.

Taurus (April 20-May 20) - Perhaps it is time for you to seek the means to improve your writing.  Secrecy can only lead to disaster.  Speak with your writing buddy one on one about writing and how you seek to improve it.  Difficulties might arise this month because you don't share the troubles you're having in writing.  You will write best on Thursdays this month.

Gemini (May 21-June 20) - Your surroundings will factor into your writing this month.  Your characters will be emotional about money.  Your writing this month should probably be something that can be enjoyed by everyone, young and old.  You will receive recognition for your writing this month.  Your best day to write will be Saturday.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) - You might not want to rely on your friends at the forum too much this month.  Instead get your inspiration from your musical selections.  Your writing this month will be more emotional than usual.  Be careful, your characters will try to make you do things with your writing that you don't really want to do.  Your best writing days will be Wednesday.

Horace Windsor stood bundled and shivering against the passenger door of his sleek black Rolls Royce. A cigarette was clenched between his bluish fingers.  He exhaled, a shaky stream of frozen breath and toxic smoke hissing from his teeth.  Christ, it was cold.

"Come on, come on," he chattered as the ancient gas pump chugged at a painstakingly slow pace.  The numbers on the meter showed little progress.  If not for his damned wife, he could have just stayed in the car.  Four days of tedious corporate meetings and he was expected to make the three hour journey home without a single cigarette?  "It will ruin the interior, Horace," she had scolded, "We only just bought the car last month."  On any other day, he would have rebelled, but he didn't feel like putting up with her nagging after returning home from such a long week.  He just wanted to get home and sleep in his own bed.  The hotel had had an uncomfortable mattress.

Rewrite Me PDF Print E-mail

There’s a new section in the Fifthwind Forums-the Rewrite Me section.  Each thread is started off with a post of a small excerpt (100-500 words) from the contributors own work or from an existing book.  Then members can each take their hand at rewriting the excerpt in their own way.  Here are some examples:

Fifthwind’s Original:
A thick odor of birch-bark tar and decaying barnacles soured the night air along the drydocks of the master shipwrights. The rhythmic swells of the summer sea pushed massive hulls up and down against the moorings, groaning like ghostly whales in the surf. The last few crates of a late-night offload reached the pier and the tired deckhands set out toward the nearest barrel house to drink themselves to sleep. In the shadows, not far away, a figure waited.

“This is as far as you go, Dak,” Varren said. “It's too dangerous from here on in.”

Dak was not the kind of name that would normally conjure the image of a girl, even if that girl were nearly a woman and had lived a tough life in the forgotten alleyways allotted to the orphaned children of the Great Tanian War.

As the years go by I find myself continually amazed at the community that has been formed on the Fifthwind Forums. Many people who were new to the craft now actively post articles and try to help newer generations of what has been affectionately termed "Fifthwinders". The most important thing to realize is that at one point in time, all of us were new to the craft, all of us had to start at the beginning. While its true many of the senior members of the site are excellent writers and have become greatly skilled in their craft, I can personally assure anyone who visits our forum that if asked, those members will refer to themselves as Students, and that is something I would like to remind the writing world of today.

"Oh my I'm falling. Yes I am, I am falling. Wow so this is what falling feels like, its so exhilarating and enjoyable. Look at all those cute little houses. At least I think they're houses. Or they could be buildings, maybe even large trees. Everythings getting so much closer, they are buildings. That house over there looks nice, I'm sure a lovely family lives there. Oh my this is a large city it keeps on going. I wonder how many people live down there, must be millions. Everyones looking up, I wonder what they're looking at. I think they are looking at me, they look scared, why do they look scared. Oh look a park! I love parks, this one looks like a nice one too. I wonder if..."

The inner dialogue of the nuclear bomb continued in this fashion as he zoomed toward the middle of a large park. He is not aware of what might happen if he lands. Everyone who saw the plane that dropped the bomb fled as quickly as they could. But the optimistic at heart stayed and watched, knowing deep down that some one out there would stop it.

ANTARCTICA - The Research facility has the sinister nickname "the Black Gate". It is owned and operated by a private research organization, the Hagen Research Institute of London.

The secrecy is exceptional. No visitors are ever allowed entry, and nobody is allowed to set their foot within a hundred yards of the Black Gate. If the perimeter is violated, the security personnel is actually authorized to use lethal force to ensure base security.

The security personnel, employees of a South African PMC, "Vektor Security Group", are no amateurs, either - ex-Special Forces soldiers are regularly employed by the company to provide iron-tight security measures for the Black Gate facility.

Even the airspace is restricted, and kept under lockdown by privately operated fighter jets belonging to a mysterious African air transport company named Talona Air Services. Their orders are, as with ground security personnel, to use lethal force to ensure the security of the mysterious polar station.

The pineapple, if it really was a pineapple and not some sort of inter-planetary spaceship, fell to the ground just in front of Jonathon.  Now not being much a conspiracy theorist Jonathon felt an overwhelming urge to pick the pineapple up and take it home with him.  So he did.  Reflecting as he did that pineapples weren't usually so heavy.  Shrugging it off he put the fruit away in his bag and continued his walk, little knowing the mischief he'd caused.

Thirty miles away a small dog conveniently named "Conspiracy" was sitting in his doghouse and reading the newspaper.  He wasn't exactly sure what he was looking for, only that he knew it would be there and so he looked.  Finally, on the second to last page he found it, "Grapefruit explodes, kills seven."  Jumping to his feet he ran out towards the drive where Jonathon would soon be parking.

In a supermarket just down the road a pineapple was slowly opening and emitting small bursts of green mist.

Jonathon pulled into the drive and stepped out of his car, cursing as his damn dog reached past him and stole his bag, running off down the street with it before he'd even had time to reprimand the thing.

In North Dakota a young girl discovered that with pennys and a potato she could light a light bulb.  She was amazed.

Loxley:  So. What'cha all think about this flick?

Me, I thought it was a disgusting pro-prawnish propaganda piece of utter crap.

Did you see the way that documentary made Dickus out to be some kind of hero, and Koobus out to be some kind of Blackwater scum? Ridiculous! Koobus Venter is a hero in my eyes, a man dedicating his life to protecting humanity, and keeping that prawnish filth off of our planet. We need more people like him in our military.

I am SO going to sign up with MNU when they open their Swedish division.

Mister Bubbles:  You MNU idealists are unbelievable.

This is a time for us to expand our responsibilities as a species! Our conception of the universe is starting to have some of the blanks filled in, and I'd hope that some of the gaps between our morals would start to be filled too...

The treatment of the "prawns", as you boorishly refer to them, out there in Johannesburg is nothing short of appalling, and given the right environment and treatment, I have every reason to hope that we might see a growth in their intelligence levels, and perhaps be able to coax them into a more aware state.
